What Makes Us Human?

Изображение
Empathy The issue of the distinction between humans and animals is being discussed constantly. Once people find a trait that distinguishes them from other creatures thus making human beings special, they become convinced of otherwise. What makes us human? The ability to empathize, to understand others’ feelings and react to them, has long been attributed to both animals and humans. However, it is not entirely true. Although some animals can express simple emotions, only humans are capable of empathy. Throughout the years there were multiple attempts to detect signs of animals’ feeling of empathy. In 1959 the American psychologist Russell Church conducted an experiment with rats. One animal stopped pressing the bar to get food when another rat in the neighbouring cage was given electric shocks. That experiment showed that the rat felt anxiety for the other one. The scientist saw a sign of possible empathy in the animal’s action. In 1962 Priscilla Gainer and George Rice observed rats’

Why Should Schools Reopen?

Why Should Schools Reopen? Today the world is going through the difficult time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to fears of mass fatalities and inability to provide all the infected people with hospital beds, governments have closed  public places, and schools are among them. Teachers and students are now trying to handle the educational process online. Seemingly, the safety precautions have not interrupted education, still, there are problems with the newly established system. The schools have to be reopened so as not to harm students mentally.   First of all, it must be emphasized that students of schools, not universities, are taken into account in the essay. They are children who remain greatly dependent on the environment they are in, that is why Lee Hudson in his article ( https://bit.ly/3cGtVY6 ) (Accessed: 17.05.2020) raises the issue of the children's impossibility of going to schools in order to escape the pressure and violence in their families during lockdown. Helicopter Parents' Influence on Their Children

Helicopter Parents' Influence on Their Children Many of us are acquainted with the phrase "helicopter parents", which are ones that have total control over their children's life. Of course, usually parents are led only by kind intentions: they want their child to be successful in the future, be provided with everything that can and cannot be afforded. But do children need this overprotection, excessive help from their mum and dad? Helicopter parenting have nothing in common with help. Katherine Schulten in her article "Do You Have Helicopter Parents?" ( https://nyti.ms/3b1ePv1 ) (Published: 14.05.2013. Accessed: 17.03.2020) names the drawbacks of the latter type of the upbringing of the child. If all problems children meet with are solved by their parent, they do not need to make an extra effort to put things together by themselves. On the one hand, this situation cannot happen with a conscientious and responsible youngster, who wants to be indepen

Should People Hate Vegans?

Should People Hate Vegans?   These days it is very popular among people to review one's eating habits, to refuse the food which has always been considered to be conventional and irreplaceable, ultimately,  to become vegans, who do not consume meat and other animal products. Not everyone wants to make any radical alterations to their diet: there are a lot of people who are completely content with what they eat. Seemingly, everyone should make their personal decisions about the lifestyle and eating habits without judging other's choices, however, there are real wars between vegans and their opponents. It is a widespread situation when people hate vegans. According to the article "Why do people hate vegans?" ( https://bit.ly/2YPP0cH ) (Published 25.10.2019. Accessed 16.12.2019) written by George Reynolds there is a number of reasons why vegans are so annoying to others. The first reason is that "preachy and sanctimonious" vegans draw everybody's att

Workplace Heat

Workplace Heat     Nowadays there are many issues connected with constantly escalating climate changes. While some problems caused by global warming find their solution, there are still a multitude of those that do not get proper attention. One of them is workplace heat. I have chosen this topic because I wanted to find out if there were any ways to make the situation better. Tord Kjellstrom in his article "From Qatar to Vietnam, global heating is making the workplace deadly for millions" ( https://bit.ly/2Pwy6vq ) (Published: 02.10.2019. Accessed: 10.12.2019) sheds the light on the issue saying that a lot of people suffer from their requirement to work under direct sunlight or in a room with no air to breathe. The author says that not hundreds but thousands of people have already died from diseases caused by dehydration and heat stroke. Professor Kjellstrom  is strongly convinced in necessity of helping people to prevent danger in a workplace, however, he admits

Part-time Job & Studies

Pros and cons of having a part-time job while studying Nowadays many students strive to find a part-time job. As far as I am concerned, there are both advantages and disadvantages in combining studies at university with working for a company. Let us start with the positive aspects of having a job during studying at the university. First of all, having a part-time job is a great opportunity for students to improve their financial situation: they no longer need to make ends meet. Having extra money, they can afford to buy high-quality food, save money for some large purchases, the students are even able to rent an apartment to live in. In other words, they may live without support from their parents.  Another point of working during studies at the university is gaining an experience. It is well known that after graduation students usually cannot find a proper job, and the only reason for this is lack of experience. Employers always look for a young certified specialists who

Resources for Education

Students striving to learn new information about different spheres of life, enlarge their knowledge upon a particular subject are constantly involved in the process of seeking new sources of education. I am predominantly interested in studying foreign languages so I have already found some sources helping me to improve my skills. For me it is really difficult to perceive information by ear so I try to listen to native speakers' speech more and TED talks help me in this task. TED is an abbreviation which means "technology, entertainment, design". It is a YouTube channel where you can find thousands of lectures connected to various aspects of life, fields of science.  Everyone who visits TED definitely finds a lot of new helpful information for oneself and, of course, practices one's English. What I find very useful about TED is that not only Brittish English speakers give talks there but also people that possess other variants of the English language, e.g. Amer
